 y Memorial Museum in Northampton PA commemorates the story of the world’
 s largest Portland cement plant and the community that developed around it
 . From 1895 until 1982\, the Atlas Company (later known as Universal Atlas
 ) produced Portland cement for some of the most iconic projects of the 20t
 h century\, including the Panama Canal\, the Empire State Building\, and t
 he Chrysler Building.  Hundreds of workers dug millions of tons of the pe
 rfect combination of limestones for making Portland cement from quarries o
 n the Jacksonburg Formation\, the “cement belt” that stretches from Wa
 rren County New Jersey to eastern Berks County. By the 1940s\, the plant e
 mployed over 5\,000 people who jobs ranged from kilns men and crusher oper
 ators to chemists\, baggers and the women who sewed and repaired the cemen
 t bags\, to farmers who tended the draft horses and mules that moved carts
  around the plant and grew the hay and oats that fed them. \n\nThe Atlas 
 Cement Company Memorial Museum is the only Portland cement museum in the U
 S. It tells the story of the cement plant and its workers through artifact
 s large and small\, images\, photographs\, film and the words of the peopl
 e who helped build our modern world. \n\nThis exclusive event is limited 
 to 25 participants. Registration is required\, and DLNHC membership will b
 e verified. While the tour is free of charge\, a suggested $10 donation to
