Those of you who travel the Lehigh Gorge know about the pair of dentures embedded in the mortar of some WPA-era stone work. Over the years, there have been rumors of an old man walking the former railbed, searching the stonework for something, but he always seemed to disappear around a bend in the trail. For some reason, this year we have received several phone calls from lone walkers or bikers, who swear they hear the smacking of toothless gums and the muffled tinkering of a mason’s trough. I don’t really buy the ghost stuff, but I do think the dentures look pretty neat.
The Delaware & Lehigh National Heritage Corridor is more than trails and landmarks—it’s a living landscape where history, culture, and community come together.
These treasures can’t protect themselves. As we approach America’s 250th anniversary, your year-end gift will help us safeguard this remarkable region and create new opportunities for connection and discovery.
