The Rise of Bethlehem Steel

National Canal Museum archivist and local historian Martha Capwell Fox will detail the rise of the great Bethlehem Steel Company from its beginnings as the Saucona Iron Company in 1857. Martha will explain how and why the company grew and also will take a close look at the multi-cultural workforce that emigrated from Europe and settled next to the steel mills in South Bethlehem. It’s a fascinating journey and one that shaped life in the Lehigh Valley for more than 125 years. Musician/singer Doug Makofka will perform ethnic songs that were heard on the streets of South Bethlehem many years ago. A buffet of ethnic foods will be provided by Culinary Experts.
