Get involved in the preservation of the Delaware & Lehigh National Heritage Corridor’s 165 miles of trail, home to hundreds of natural and historic resources. These sites are connected by the route that anthracite coal once took from mine to market; a route that played an important role in the American Industrial Revolution. Today, the D&L Trail connects people to nature, culture, communities, recreation and our industrial heritage.

The Trail Tender’s Program is organized into three regions: Anthracite (Luzerne and Carbon counties), Lehigh Valley (Lehigh Gap to Easton), and Delaware Valley (Easton to Bristol). Volunteers work individually in a region of their choice or cooperatively with other groups on larger projects. These projects range from litter clean up, drainage repairs, and amenities enhancements, to brush removal, native plantings, and sign installation.

Since the program’s inception, more than 5,000 volunteer D&L Trail Tenders have spent 300,000 hours maintaining and restoring the D&L Trail. Their work allows the public to catch a glimpse of the canal structures, locks, homes and industries that existed along the canal towpaths and railroad lines in the 1800s and early 1900s. Without the Trail Tenders, the Corridor and its heritage would be far less visible.
