River Union Stage (RUS) proudly presents a staged reading of Low Bridge, Everybody Down: The Life and Times of Jimmy Brown, a graphic novel created by Delaware & Lehigh National Heritage Corridor and the National Canal Museum. Written by Amy Hollander, illustrated by Will Rosado, and designed by Julius Harmon, this project was made possible through funding from the Institute of Museum and Library Services Inspire! Grant.
As part of the ongoing “From Page to Stage” series, this special event brings the graphic novel to life, blending performance and visual storytelling to give voice to Jimmy Brown’s remarkable journey.
About the story:
Based on real events, this graphic novel shines a light on the final decades of the Delaware and Lehigh Canal Systems, seen through the eyes of Jimmy Brown, a Black canal worker whose life offers a rare and personal perspective on the era.
In 1910, at just ten years old, Jimmy ran away from home and began working as a mule driver along the Delaware Canal. Navigating a world filled with both hardship and hope, he overcomes challenges, faces discrimination, and builds a chosen family on the canal. Through determination and a resilient spirit, Jimmy eventually earns the role of boat captain.
This inspiring and adventurous true story invites readers—and now, audiences—to experience an often-overlooked part of American history.
A live audience Q&A will follow the performance.
Join us for an unforgettable evening celebrating storytelling, resilience, and history brought to life on stage.
